The keys already in the building

Kehinde Wiley painted Young Artists for the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo: Dominican sitters on the wall of an American room, by the artist who made Barack Obama's official portrait. Last week the State Department took the canvas down. Officials say they are weighing whether they can sell the work they now call "woke."

On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, we hold that wall to one pressure: a room that already has the keys, and a test that will not stay inside it.

The Smithsonian's board of regents meets August 31. On the table is the National Museum of the American Latino in the Arts and Industries Building, which the Institution already owns.
