Counted the rooms

The Art Gallery of Ontario will tell you the decade worked. Stephan Jost, director since 2016, leaves December 31 because, he says, the plan called AGO 2028 is already met. More than 18,000 works came in. A wing of 40,000 square feet, 100 million Canadian dollars, is going up. Most visitors are now under 39. That is the score they chose.

On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, we hold that score to one pressure: what an institution counts when it says the work is done.

The score does not include the month in 2024 when more than 400 workers struck and the gallery went dark. It does not include Wanda Nanibush's departure, or the Nan Goldin acquisition that never landed and took a curator with it. In San Diego the Institute of Contemporary Art counted revenue until the count failed. Eight people were cut, almost half the staff, including the only curator. Staff asked the board to remove director Andrew Utt. Checks bounced. The Balboa Park campus is closed. Cat Gunn's show was pulled a month early. Nobody told the artist.

University College London followed 2,759 people born in 1946. Hardship stacked through early and middle adulthood. By 53 the thinking was poorer. Later the scans showed a smaller brain. Jacques Wels says it is the years, not one bad season. A bounced museum paycheck is not color. It is one of those years.

Meta told staff that reviews will no longer count how many tokens they burned. They had been grading the use of the tool, not the work. At Harbin, Chao Shen and Jiaze Li find that a laser sail, past about 75 percent of the speed of light, is dragged by the same photons that pushed it. Keep scoring the push and the push becomes drag.

Convergence is not a wing that opens on time. It is whether payroll is in the collection, or only the square feet.
